URBANNA HAPPENINGS

The Chesapeake Oyster Company has now opened in Urbanna.  This restaurant is where Mojos used to be.  The sign on the window says they are open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and they do take out as well.  I believe they are open from Wednesday through Saturday.

URBANNA HAPPENINGS

Yea!!! We now have a new seafood market open in the Urbanna
area! The new market, Urbanna Seafood Market, is in the same
location as the old Shores and Ruark market at 453 Johnsons
Dr, (from Urbanna, turn right on Burrells Marina Rd and
follow the signs). Contact them at 758-8588 to order in
advance.

They are open Mon-Sat, 10-7, and they hope to be open year
round. They have fresh seafood and will also offer cooked
food for "take-out only" from 11-7. It is not a restaurant,
since they don't serve food, but the take out will be
available by land and by boat! Let's all support them so
they can be successful!

Memorial Weekend

The swimming pool will be open this weekend - and we hope we will have some nice weather to enjoy it.

The lock on the gents toilet at the north dock has not yet been repaired, but this is underway - please bear with us as we wait for our locksmith to remedy this.

It's time for our first Artists' Reception of 2014!
For the first time since we opened the Gallery, in 2011, WE are the featured artists!
The plan was always to be images of Ireland, and it was to have included our paintings as well as photographic images.
However, we've been so busy promoting everyone else's art that we never had time to pull out the paints and get back into it!
But, we have more than 40 original matted & framed photographs of Ireland, taken by us, printed by us, and framed by us.

Please come this Friday January 26 - 5-8p.m. and enjoy some food, beverages, and the good company of our supporters!

As has been our schedule for the past 6 years, the water has been turned off the week following the Oyster Festival .  The water was turned off and the system winterized last Thursday.

It's that time again - 2 parking passes are being mailed to each slip owner - don't forget to give your renter one of your passes.

As in previous years, the pool will stay open until the end of September.

Water Supply at UHYC

We regret that due to water supply failure at Urbanna Harbour the bathrooms will be closed for a couple of days and there is not water at the docks.

The pool may well have to be closed if the water level drops too low.

We are working hard to correct the problems we are having.

REMINDERS

Hello everybody,

Here's looking forward to a good summer at UHYC.   We have several new slip owners and lots more new renters in the harbour and this little reminder will serve to help us all to keep UHYC the place we want to be.

Pool

Please do not let anyone into the pool who does not have a key unless you know they are slip holders/renters.   If you do not know who a person is,  tell them to call one of the board members for help.

Refreshments are allowed in the pool area but  glass bottles are not permitted because if they break and get into the water they are invisible and dangerous.

Trash

During busy weekends if the trash containers in either the pool or the restrooms get full - please empty them and place a new liner (you will find in the bottom of the trash bins). If you do not do this WHO DOES - we do not have people employed to clean up after you!   ALSO if you go the dumpster in the car park and it is crammed full (as it was this weekend).  Do not leave your trash on top of the dumpster or on the ground nearby.   Take your trash to Stormont center or take it home because the people who collect the trash for us do not collect anything that is not INSIDE the dumpster itself.  This means that PHIL MULLINS(our maintenance volunteer) ends up clearing up after you.  Remember if you do not clear up after yourself  consider the person WHO DOES?  

Deck Carts

When using the carts please return them immediately so that others have access.

The Docks

Please do not leave anything blocking the docks directly in front of your boat.  Remember these docks are for all of us to use.  Also make sure that your bow does not hang over the docks - this is an important safety issue.

Use of Marina Carts

Many people used the marina carts to transport their belongings to their boats and do not return them to the  bath houses after they had unloaded them.   This is very inconsiderate as the carts are for everyone's use and we are asking you to return them immediately after unloading so that other people may have the convenience of using these carts.  

Also if the carts are left on the dock overnight and the wind picks up, they are light enough to blow off the docks into the creek.  We have lost several carts in the past due to this.  Even on ordinary weekends when traffic is light we ask you to return the carts immediately after unloading.

If you see someone has left a cart on the dock it would be very nice if you politely asked them to return the carts for others to use.

Reparations to clubhouse

For those of you who were not at the AGM this email is to let you know that reparations are underway on the clubhouse.   All should be finished by Memorial weekend.   We have had to replace the shingles on the roof and also the siding.

Also we ask you to bear with us whilst we continue to work on the ladies bathroom at the south docks.   We have commenced work on this but over the weekend there will be a tiny freshwater leak in one of the stools.   This toilet will be replaced next week.  The bathhouse is quite usable but you do not need to contact us regarding any of these problems.

The First Urbanna Event will be held May 18th, 2013!

We are very excited about our first sanctioned CCWBRA race.

Cocktail Class Wooden Boat Racing

These exciting little boats are fun to build and exhilarating to race. This isn't just fun for the men, it's a family sport with racing classes for children 12 and younger, children 13 to 16 and adults with different weight classes. You build your boat from a kit or blueprint, choose your own theme and graphics and start racing. The boats are powered by either a 6 or 8 horsepower engine depending on the weight class. Cocktail Class Wooden Boat Racing, it's intoxicating........

We are pleased to let you know that the pump out station is now
dewinterized and operatonal.

INWATER BOAT BOTTOM CLEANING

For your information we have two companies working with us for those who wish to have the bottom of their boat cleaned but do not wish to haul.  These diving companies are as follows:

The maintenance director has decided in light of the severe weather we are having that we will now dewinterize the docks on Friday April 5.

Water Turnoff at UHYC

The docks will be winterized on the Monday following the Oyster
Festival (November 5). Bathroom facilities will function all winter as usual.

OYSTER FESTIVAL

Parking Permits have been mailed out. Each slip received 2
passes. If you have a renter, your renter should receive one of your
passes. Urbanna Harbour Homeowners are not being mailed passes but
your renters will receive a pass in the mail. Please display your
permit on your windshield inside your vehicle - cars without permits
will be towed.

We are pleased to report that thanks to Phil Mullins and Clyde Roper

VESSEL SAFETY CHECK

Fred Eddowes is organizing a vessel safety check which will take
place on 19th May commencing at 10:00A on the NORTH DOCK at UHYC.

schedule. We already have several boats scheduled.

FAMILIES OF GEESE

Well this year we have two families of geese. There is a younger
family alongside our regular older geese. The older parents have 9
goslings and the younger birds have 3 goslings. It's a delight to
see them growing. Take care when driving through the neighbourhood.

URBANNA FARMERS MARKET

The first Urbanna Farmers Market of the year will take place on
Saturday May 12. We hope if you are in town you will come visit
us. We have 48 venders - and it's also Art on the Half Shell.

The water is back on the docks following dewinterization. Pool will
be opened as scheduled - Memorial Day.

Storm Damage Repair

During the winter months a float got damaged by a swim platform at
UHYC and this week David, Roger and Phil got together and replaced
the damaged float with a new one. Our thanks for their hard work.

The AGM will be held at the clubhouse on May 5 - commencing at

We are rather surprised to find the Canada Geese family is back. Is

NEW CLUBHOUSE WINDOWS

Work is now completed on the clubhouse windows - that should hold
good for many years. Cheers to Phil and the maintenance

It looks as if Saturday is going to be a lovely day. We hope those
of you who come to Urbanna to join in the oyster festival events will
have a great day with lots of oysters and lots of fun.

DIVER SERVICES

Fred Eddowes ask me to let you know that  D J Cline of Nautical Limits, Inc. will be available at our docks for bottom cleaning and  zinc replacements.  He will be there on Oct. 4 and subsequent months on the first Tuesday every month.  He charges $2.00  per foot for bottom cleaning and $10 for zinc replacements plus cost of zinc.  Extra difficult bottoms may cost $20 - $30 more for the first cleaning. 

He is good and this is a great way to save money because he works in the water so you don't have to haul your boat.  He is also available for other dive work if needed.

HURRICANE IRENE

Please make every effort to secure your boat for the onslaught of
Hurricane Irene which is expected to hit our area this coming
weekend. Double up on your lines - especially your spring lines and
remove anything from no deck which is not part of the structure of
the boat. We would also recommend that you take down your bimini tops.

MEMORIAL WEEKEND COOKOUT

Please join us for our annual Memorial Weekend cookout. May 28th

NEW FIRE EXTINGUISHERS INSTALLED

This morning David installed six new fire extinguishers on the
docks. There are six in all, two on the end of each entrance ramp.

UPGRADED SEPTIC SYSTEM FOR CLUBHOUSE

Our maintenance director Phil Mullins is slowly working through all
of the deficiencies in our different systems. The toilet at the
clubhouse has, on several occasions, been prone to the tank
overflowing and flooding the toilet with sewage. To alleviate this
problem Phil has had a new pump installed, a new float switch and
also a red warning light. This warning light is to give us early
warning if there is a problem with the system overfilling. If
anyone sees the warning light flashing you should inform one of the
directors listed on the notice board between the two toilets.

We have 9 goslings - take care when driving through! Will try to

AGM

We had a very successful Annual General Meeting on Saturday 16th
April. Thank you to everyone who attended and to Fred and Betty for
providing such nice refreshments.

NEW BOATING LAWS IN VA

The US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla is offering an "About Boating
Safety" class at the Masonic Lodge on Grace Street in Urbanna on
Saturday April 16 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. this is the same day as our
Annual General Meeting.

Auxiliary members will answer questions and advise on water and
safety requirements for boaters. The changes in VA law requirements
include: As of July 1 2010 all PWC operators 35 years old and
younger must complete a boating safety course.
Beginning July 1, 2011 all PWC operators 50 and younger must take a
boating safety course. Boat operators ages 20 and younger need to
take a boat safety course.

The April 16 class is free of charges - textbooks can be purchased

reserve a seat, walk-ins will be welcomed.

NEW PUMP-OUT STATION

We are pleased to let you know that after much research and many
weeks of hard work we have placed an order for a new/replacement
peristaltic pump-out station. This, together with the installation,
will cost around $11,000 - of which the good news is that state pays
for 75%. We think you will all agree that this additional upgrade
to our marina will make life so much easier for us all. In the
very near future we will be placing an order for a solar powered tank alert.

TURNING THE WATER BACK ON

The water on the docks will be turned on April 2. There is a
certain procedure we need to follow so we do not exert too much
pressure at once which can cause leak problems. We must follow this
procedure so we do not invalidate our warranty.

THE CANADA GEESE ARE HERE

The geese are back at the pond. Surely a sign that better things
are around the corner????

HAPPY NEW YEAR

weeks you will be receiving your 2011 dues invoice, record update
sheet and budget - so keep a lookout for this information coming the
mail to you soon.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ONE AND ALL

Here's wishing everyone a Happy Christmas (or whatever you
celebrate) and a wonderful New Year. Let's hope that we all get in
a full year's sailing in 2011!! There will be a big mailing going

DOCKS ARE NOW WINTERIZED!

Phil Mullins has informed us that the docks are now winterized -
always a bit sad to see the end of the season! However, enjoy the
lovely warm sunny days while you can.

WINTERIZATION

WATER TO THE DOCKS WILL BE SHUT OFF AFTER THE OYSTER FESTIVAL -
EITHER NOVEMBER 8 OR 9.

THE ENTIRE SYSTEM WILL BE DRAINED AND WINTERIZED.

ALL CLEAR FROM THE AUTHORITIES

The authorities have now given the all clear on the water
contamination at UHYC - this mainly affected the homeowners, but we
did have to purge our system. We are now working to file our claim
with the insurance company concerned.

URBANNA OYSTER FESTIVAL

Parking Permits for the Annual Urbanna Oyster Festival are being
mailed out this week. We hope the weather will be wonderful and we
will all enjoy this special event.

There has been a water contamination problem found at Urbanna Harbour Subdivision.  Unfortunately this has also, to a lesser extent,  impacted our docks.   State and local authorities are instructing us as to the action that has to be taken.     It is hoped that the corrective measures will be completed by mid week next week but meanwhile please do not DRINK the water on the docks.   If you come down this weekend we recommend that you bring bottled water for drinking.  The water is OK for all other uses.    Of course you also cannot drink the water in the bath houses.

We have an incredible amount of rain the last few days - you might
want to plan on visiting your boat if you have not already done so to
make sure all is well.

POOL CLOSING

The UHYC pool will officially close on October 1. We hope you have
all enjoyed the new security this year.

NEW SIGNS

If you have not been down to your boat lately you will not have seen
the new signs we are installing. These are really smart and a great
improvement over the old signs. Check them out next time you are in Urbanna.
